Oracle ADDM monitoring on AWS

OEM 12c is the away to go for monitoring ADDM metric (DB diagnostic for ADDM).  You can test drive OEM 12c running on AWS EC2 here:

You can also monitor EC2, RDS and EBS volumes when running Oracle on AWS using the OEM 12c plug-in for AWS:

Oracle Enterprise Manager and AWS EC2 instance restart

Question: An EC2 restart causes OEM to loss IP address of OEM management console - Is there a way to attach a static IP address to an EC2 instance instead the default o
Response: If you assign an Elastic IP address to the EC2
instance before installing OEM, then you should have no problem.
Once the EC2 instance has been created (without an EIP) and
OEM has been installed there is no
other way to do it except to use this workaround -

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c AWS plug in

There is now a plug in for Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) so OEM 12c can be used to monitor Oracle technology running on AWS:

This plug in uses AWS CloudWatch metrics and can monitor EBS, EC2 and RDS.

Oracle Enterprise Manager on EC2 - IP address change after reboot

The script (/usr/local/bin/sethostname) to be run by cron:

·        Login as root.
·        vi /usr/local/bin/sethostname
·        Place the following line in the /usr/local/bin/sethostname
       echo desired_hostname > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname
·        chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/sethostname
·        Issue crontab –e and place the following line in the cron tab and save.
   # SET HOSTNAME
   * * * * * /usr/local/bin/sethostname >> /usr/local/bin/sethostname.log 2>&1
·        The desired_hostname and IP entry needs to be in the /etc/hosts file

desired_hostname = Hostname of your choice.

Oracle Enterprise Manager on EC2

The situation:  Every time your reboot an AWS  server (EC2 instance - you may to do this to reattach an EBS volume that is in an LVM), - the Enterprise Manager in Oracle gets confused with the temporary host name (since the elastic IP is detached on restart). So when you assign the elastic IP back to the instance Enterprise Manager is referring to the temp hostname it got when the server rebooted. What is the recommended path to handling a server restart on elastic IPs without breaking OEM?
Solution:
I found these two items on web which may be useful:
Both mention using this process at instance boot time:
1. export ORACLE_HOSTNAME=`wget -q -O - http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/public-hostname`
2. export EMKEY_LOCATION=/u02/admin/$ORACLE_SID/
3. dbs emca -config dbcontrol db

Oracle Enterprise Manager with AWS Database Instance

Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Database Control support was just announced this May. It seems like it may be a long time in coming but Oracle Database support on the AWS cloud was first released just a few years ago in September 2008. Here is a great blog entry on using OEM with Oracle on AWS:

AWS OEM for Oracle DB

Remember that without https in front of the URL OEM will not respond.https://ec2-99-55-139-99.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com:1158/em
