AWS Migration Sessions

Migrating large fleets of legacy applications to AWS cloud infrastructure requires careful planning, since each phase needs to balance risk tolerance against the speed of migration.
Through participation in many large-scale migration engagements with customers, AWS Professional Services has developed a set of successful best practices, tools, and techniques that help migration factories optimize speed of delivery and success rate. In this session, we cover the complete lifecycle of an application portfolio migration with special emphasis on how to organize and conduct the assessment and how to identify elements that can benefit from cloud architecture.

Breakout Sessions 2:00 - 3:00

Cloud Migration, Application Modernization and Security for Partners

As AWS continues to expand, enterprise customers are increasingly looking to our partner ecosystem to assist in migrating their workloads to the cloud. This session describes the challenges, lessons learned and best practices for large scale application migrations. We will use real examples from our consulting partners and AWS Professional Services to illustrate how to move workloads to the cloud while modernizing the associated applications to take advantage of AWS’ unique benefits. We will also dive into how to use an array of AWS services and features to improve a customer’s security posture as they are migrating and once they are up and running in the cloud.

IAM : AWS services not supported and tagging support

I often get the question of which services do not support IAM?  Some services and features do not support IAM and must use the AWS root account credentials:

  • Vulnerability Scanning Coordination Form
  • AWS Workspaces
  • Visibility of all Data Pipelines
  • Specific account management pages, such as account profile, AWS account security credentials, payment methods and management of consolidated billing
  • AWS DevPay
  • CloudFront keypair creation

A full list of supported services is here:
http://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/Using_SpecificProducts.html

This page also provides a great list of IAM resource level permissions support, tagging, and STS.

Simplify Cost Allocation Reporting with CloudCheckr on Amazon Web Services

As deployments scale, utilization and purchasing strategies become increasing important. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and CloudCheckr, an AWS Technology partner invite you to join this presentation to learn strategies that can enable finer control and cost management structures to improve your price-to-performance metrics.
We'll provide an overview how customers today evaluate resource distribution and configurations to efficiently scale deployments using CloudCheckr. In particular, we'll address the differences between on-demand, reserved and spot instances and the most appropriate use for each.

AWS resource tagging

Tagging of resources is great for billing and managing your resources. You also need to be aware of the EC2 and networking services and resources that do not support tagging:

AWS IAM Service

AWS IAM is not for application level security.  IAM is a control plane for AWS Services. For example, you can create an IAM user to limit access to the AWS web console.  For application security, you continue to use an LDAP server or your own identity management solution.

Cross region AWS Services

There are a few AWS services that are cross region:
  • IAM
  • Cloud Front
  • Route 53
